To become a bookkeeper, it is important to have basic computer knowledge as one might be required to make use of any bookkeeping software and this cannot be done without a good hand on operating the computer. Along with the computer knowledge one can do courses in accounting systems and automated payroll also, as these are an integral part of the duties that are performed by a bookkeeper. If one is very much serious about making bookkeeping a full time career, then it would be fine if the person gets advanced knowledge in the accounting.

To add on to ones knowledge making it suitable for the present day working patterns of the bookkeepers, one has to make an effort and learn about the software packages that can be used to maintain the ledgers and to carry out complete tax preparation. It is always worth to have hands on practical knowledge as in the job of a bookkeeper; most of the work requires complete seriousness and dedication as it is considered to be a job that involves great responsibility.
