About 13 years ago I was just starting out in small biz and really not sure where to start with the books. I spoke to my accountant and although she had not had much experience in MYOB software she advised me to start using that. We fumbled our way through the program over the next couple of years and 13 years later I am now helping others to understand it better through flexible, workplace and distance bookkeeping courses.

I understand the importance of bookkeeping from a small business owners perspective (I have owned small businesses since that first one 13 years ago) and I also understand that bookkeeping is becoming an industry all of its own as most accountants are saying that they don't want the hassle of the day to day bookkeeping management.

I also understand that bookkeeping is a great work from home opportunity as during the last 13 years I have been able to work around my kids routines as they have grown ... they are now 10 and 8. I have found it a great way to work when they are asleep or at school as they are now.

The industry is now recognising the importance of this role in business, as they starting to regulate and ensure that bookkeepers are training and properly qualified - so you need to ensure that you understand these requirements before signing up with training organisations.

As far as career prospects it is a great area to be moving into if you are passionate about it ... because there are a lot of people out there that are not interested in Bookkeeping and that is why there is always going to be potential for jobs and opportunities.
